What does the kidnapper mean when he refers to Mitch as being like a Ferrari in the novel, The Husband?

The kidnapper knows he is controlling Mitch like a machine, and knows that machines have limitations. The kidnapper explains that it makes no sense to abuse a valuable and sensitive machine, and although he expects high performance, he wouldn't drive the Ferrari into a wall and expect it to survive the crash.
