In its most literal sense, the McBride's antique shop symbolizes an older, simpler time, as it is full of old items that draw customers in with the charm of the past. This is why Anneliese uses it as her cover in an attempt to lie low and start her new life; the shop's charisma means it perfectly encapsulates an ideal American life, romanticizing the past and attempting to bring it into the present.
