Why did Tom Clancy write The Hunt for Red October?

Clancy's inspiration for the novel was The Last Sentry, the story of the 1975 mutiny aboard the Soviet destroyer Storozhevoy that was intended to overthrow Leonid Brezhnev and the Soviet government.
