What is the author's style in The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy?

For the most part, the story is told using very simple language that is known to the average reader. Occasionally there are phrases in Russian, but all of them are either translated or explained within the context of the story. Russian culture is also explored in some detail within the novel. Readers need at least a basic understanding of Russian culture, and particularly the culture of the Soviet Union, in order to understand some elements of the plot that directly refer to the social and political organizations of the Soviet Union.
