THE HOUSE OF MIRTH BY EDITH WHARTON

"It was the last asset in their fortunes, the nucleus around which their life was to be rebuilt."

What is the meaning behind this description of Lily's beauty?

In context, Lily's beauty and former status was the only thing the family had left to rebuild their own wealth. Her father was ruined and penniless, thus, Lily's needed to make a prestigious marraige that would return that status.
