One of the main themes in The House of Dies Drear is the importance of history. When the small family moves to Ohio, Mr. Small chooses Dies Drear as their home because of its historical significance during the Civil War. While living there, he makes facinating discoveries about the Underground Railroad, which also serve to educate and interest his son.
