Hari is a representation of Lakshmi’s past and her ability to change. Throughout the novel, Hari and Lakshmi change alongside each other, even though they have very little to do with each other. As Lakshmi’s life shifts from her henna business to full-time healing, Hari shifts from an abusive man to an understanding one focused on healing those who cannot help themselves. The two are similar in this regard, as both of them find happiness in helping others. And when Lakshmi finally accepts that Hari can change, she too finds the strength to move on from her past.
