Who is Grindle from The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray and what is their importance?

Grindle is an old man, a member of Lord Crott's gang of beggars. He is badly scarred from some sort of an attack. Grindle is killed in the sewers below the Crooked Lanes, by a wych-kin known as a wight.
