The Commander is passive aggressive and naive. He wants certain things from Offred but is unsure how to go about it. He certainly has the power to do what he wants but his emotional needs seem stronger than his sexual needs. The narrator describes him as not "all bad". He loves books and his idea of foreplay is playing Scrabble.
