You need to specify each character one at a time. Offred's mother, who is never named was active in the earlier feminist movement that secured women the right to have jobs, remain unmarried, and get abortions - all rights that have been taken away under the current regime. Offred and her mother still have a relationship when Offred is grown, though it is far from perfect.
