One major theme in the novel, The Guide, is that of self-deceit. Rahu's character believes that success will be found by what he makes himself appear to be.... he thinks that the clothing makes the man..... that it's all about where you go and how you're seen. He's never able to understand that the fact he's convinced himself he's a great and important man just doesn't make it so.
