Sunset and light represent the gilded life of the Miltons. It also represents their denial of anything unpleasant or distasteful. When the topic of war arises, Kitty dismisses it and demands they all look at the "shock of gold" light that sweeps across the sea (109). The topic of war is summarily dismissed and all present on the Island watch the sunset from the veranda. Sunsets also represent their stoicism in the face of turmoil.
