What difference does it make that despite all the suspense, fear, and allusion to violence, Camus omits violence from the story?

The expectation of violence often provides more suspense than actual violence. Daru does not experience physical violence but does experience emotional violence. The note scrawled on the chalkboard effectively end's Daru's dreams and sense of identity.
