The gun Balducci gives Daru is a symbol of the violence that Daru abhors yet inevitably, might have to use to protect him. Dary rejects the gun but he cannot escape the fact that he is still French in a country that does not want him there. It is interesting that although there are many symbols of violence in the story, there is actual no violence that takes place.
