Books are a symbol of opportunity in America for Liborio. It is through reading the books in Jefe’s bookshop that he gains knowledge of the English language and makes connections with the world around him. They stimulate his mind and provide a counterbalance for his affinity for fighting and violence. Jefe’s insistence that his books remain in such good physical condition imbues Liborio with a stronger appreciation for books and the knowledge they represent as he goes from reluctant reader to running a library at the shelter.
