Elizabeth is Mr. Trent's oldest daughter. She is not attractive, and therefore she's had trouble finding a husband. Elizabeth has been raised to become a wife and mother, thus, she isn't prepared to get a job. She has no other prospects. It is for this reason that Elizabeth and her parents jump at the chance Pierce represents when he comes to court her. Elizabeth believes Pierce to be genuine, and she gives him the information he needs about the key. After he finds out what he needs to know.... he loses all interest. Elizabeth eventually marries someone else.
