Who is Mat Cauthon from The Great Hunt and what is their importance?

Mat, like Rand and Perrin, is found in Emond's Field. He is described as easy-going and full of tricks, at least until an encounter with Mordeth leaves him greatly changed. Mat carries a dagger and is believed to be a direct descendant of the last king.
