Why is Gatsby's house unkempt in Chapter 8?

It is messy because all of his time is now devoted to Daisy, whom he's started an affair. And, a good deal of his time is spent keeping that fact a secret. He doesn't have to impress her any longer by throwing lavish parties or having all of her friends over.
