Why does Gatsby want the American Dream?

Gatsby's biggest inspiration is making himself worthy of Daisy. He believes that if he acquires wealth and prestige, he will get the girl. Gatsby, however, doesn't realize that the money and prestige do not equal bloodlines and status.
