Why does Fitzgerald list all of Gatsby's party guests?

This is a device used by the author to illustrate just how shallow all of the people were that attended the parties. Gatsby didn't know half of the people that came to his parties, and yet, the lists were enormous. Thus, the list is long to show the pervasiveness of this attitude.
