What was the ambiguity in Nick's initial description of Gatsby?

The ambiguity is that when Nick first meets Gatsby he does not know that he's the host. Gatsby is just referenced as 'a man'. Of course, the irony is that he's the host and Nick doesn't know him, and of course, Gatsby is an invention of Jay.
