Nick is almost voyeristic in his relationship with the Buchanans. The Buchanans like have him around because they can flaunt their wealth and it both impresses and repulses (even amuses) Nick. For a while they may even see something in Nick that they lack in themselves and by having him around, regain it, if only briefly.
