What does the color yellow mean in The Great Gatsby?

It represents phoniness, things that are fake, people who are not what they seem. If you'll notice at the beginning of the novel, when we don't know the characters very well, most of the women (and some of the men) are wearing white and light colored clothing. As we get to know them, along with Nick, their clothes begin to take on cream and yellow colorations. Their falsity begins to come out, so to speak.
