How does the Valley of Ashes show industrial decay?

Gatsby represents that segment of the nation that believes that the American Dream is all about money. Gatsby certainly was all about money, and in the end, he did not come to a good end. He represents the 'idea' that in America one can come from nowhere, work hard, and make a lot of money, therefore reaching and attaining the American dream.
