The Valley of Ashes represents the dark underbelly of the American Dream. In this situation the dream is dark and lifeless. The ashes demonstrate death and destruction. The industrial nature of the area shows how humanity has been replaced by machines and efficiency where the product and the money is king and people are mere pawns toward those goals.
