How does Gatsby represent the American dream?

Jay Gatsby represents the American dream in that, like America, he started out poor, having to scrape and fight for his freedom from his poverty. He literally went from rags to riches and was able to become what he desired. The American Dream is the idea that anyone that wants to badly enough can reinvent themselves.
