In this book, as in general, McCullough writes history for everyday readers, helping them hear, taste, and feel what it is like to live and work in a given period. In The Great Bridge, McCullough succeeds admirably in bringing out the seesaw of enthusiasm and doubt, the political ins and outs, and the courage, compassion, and heartlessness that all lie behind the Great Bridge.
