One major theme in the novel, The Grave, is social order. This theme is illustrated in the way Miranda and her older sister are raised without benefit of a woman's guidance, as both mother and grandmother are dead. As a result, their unladylike behavior is a source of gossip, and the two girls are alienated from proper society.
