Weedpatch ranch is a better situation than they've had in a very long time. It is a government sponsored place where migrants live and maintain everything. Showers, toilets, and a roof over their head seems like heaven. There is work for Tom and the camp manager treats Ma with respect, as if they are 'real people'. This is why Ma makes the above statement.
