The Germans were unhappy with the clause for a few different reasons. First, they took no responsibility for causing the war, as they claimed to be acting in self-defense. Second, the Germans refused to accept "defeat" because they agreed to a cease-fire, which meant it was an agreement rather than a loss. Lastly, the treaty created vast economical and political problems for Germany, including territorial restrictions, losses, and the payment of reparations.
