At the end of the novel, the people are celebrating the Festival. Ranofer sees no one about town, so he sneaks onto the palace grounds, and almost makes it to the palace before he is caught. Once there, he is able to convince a friend of the queen's of his story. He is then taken to the queen and convinces her his story is true. As a result, Ranofer is rewarded with new clothing and new donkey to assist him in earning the money he will need to live on his own.... to become a student of Zau the Master.
