What is the author's style in The Gold of Tomas Vargas by Isabel Allende?

In the story, Allende divides her characters along some very stark lines. The characters are either despicable, sympathetic, or heroic. On the other end of the spectrum are the sympathetic or heroic characters, both of whom inspire the reader's affection.
