Who is Barron Neville from The Gods Themselves and what is their importance?

Barron Neville was born on the moon and continues to live there as a scientist. His goal is to find a way for the moon to gain propulsion, so the Earth can be left behind. He does have supporters in this, but the majority of mankind doesn't agree with his proposal.
