Is there an abusive relationship that stands out for you? Why?

I might consider Mammachi and Pappachi
"He had always been a jealous man, so he great resented the attention his wife was getting...every night he beat her with a brass flower vase"

What stood out for me was that this abuse seemed alomost normal in the culture, an accepted dynamic of marriage.
