Who is Muhammad Bilal from The Glory Field and what is their importance?

Muhammad Bilal is the first character introduced in the story and the first recorded member of the Lewis family tree. Taken from his native Africa, Bilal makes the dangerous journey through the Middle Passage and after months of deprivation finds himself on a South Carolina plantation.
