What proves Elijah Lewis's maturity in Section 3?

In Section Three, Elijah decides to fix up the boat to make some extra money for the family. He also makes a bargain with Hamlin Turner to search for his son, in return, Turner will lend Saran the money to pay the taxes on the Glory Field.
