The action in the novel takes place in several different settings. The novel begins with Muhammad Bilal's journey to the United States aboard a slave ship from Sierra Leone in West Africa. The second section of the narrative concerns the Lewis plantation, Live Oaks, which is on Curry Island. Curry Island is a fictional location. A significant portion of the novel takes place in the city of Chicago, Illinois.
