I do. I believe the tone throughout the book is acceptance and forgiveness toward her parents. She accepted the fact that her father had an illness and realized early on that he was unable or unwilling to stop his drinking. Therefore, unable to be a responsible parent. Her mother early on realized the same thing and continued to provide little mothering for and toward the children.
