The individual and freedom of choice are both powerful themes in the Giver. By eliminating as much personal variation as possible in favour of Sameness and a predictable society, people are forced to conform to simplistic one-dimensional lives. Although people are spared emotional highs and lows, their lives lack depth and meaning.
