The Giver Themes

Memory is explored through the character of the Giver, who holds the memories and passes them onto to Jonas, who is the receiver. Memories are considered too harsh for the average person, history too bleak. The Giver passes on the memories to the receiver, so that he will later be able to assist the community in making decisions.
