The Giver

Sensory / Descriptive writing Using the last 4-5 chapters of the book, pick a part and describe what Jonas would have been feeling. Use your 5 senses to describe his situation, and write in the 1st person (using I, me etc.). Write a one page (2-3 paragraph) description of his senses as he runs away from his home. You will need to give background information on what part you are discussing in the book - explain what has happened and what is happening at this part of the book. Then, write your descriptive paragraph describing his situation. Use at least 1 simile and 1 metaphor in your writing.

I'm sorry, we are unable to provide students with essays on this short-answer forum.

Using the last four to five chapters, you might consider Jonas' confusion and anger over his father's work... the true meaning of release that has been kept from him up until this point. You might also detail Jonas' emotional response to learning of Gabriel's planned release, something that causes Jonas' to experience additional anger, fear, nervousness, and most importantly, a new sense of determination.

In the final chapters, Jonas faces the unknown, but he does so maturely, as he needs to soothe Gabriel during their escape. Jonas is the leader, the responsible one, and he takes this responsibility seriously. As they move closer to their destination, Jonas imagines (or not) that he hear music ahead... something that provides him with hope.
