Jonas gets feelings throughout the story that are "abnormal" for what other people in the community feel. He, for example, has sexual "stirrings" for Fiona. Jonas's mother thinks he needs a stronger dose of pills to control his sexual desire. Jonas is special. His senses and emotional feelings are stronger and more acute than other people in the community.
