Adunni uses music throughout the novel as a means of escape and personal comfort. Music and singing are introduced at moments to signify a moment of personal growth within certain moments of extreme oppression to signify a certain internal autonomy that she has found within herself. By singing while gardening at Big Madam’s house, and by making up songs about her anticipated freedom while at Morufu’s, she presents the action of music as a reflection of personal strength and confidence.
