Mrs. Thomas is the woman Clemantine refers to as her American mother. When the church community in Chicago noticed Clemantine's needs, they placed her in the Thomas family home. Living with Mrs. Thomas and her husband, Clemantine was afforded a privileged life in the Chicago suburb of Kenilworth. Mrs. Thomas not only provided for Clemantine, but tried to help her orient to life in the States.
