References to human faces throughout the narrative symbolize emotion. Not long after fleeing Kigali, Clemantine learns that she must stop asking questions. Instead of discovering her world through inquiry, Clemantine learns to search and study others' faces to understand what they are feeling, and what they expect of her. The worse the wars become, the more terrified and anguished people appear, despite their refusal to express or emote.
