The Gifts of Imperfection is written from the author, Brené Brown's perspective in the first person limited omniscient. When she recounts stories from her own life, they are based entirely in her perceptions, memories, and experiences.

Brown adds to her own perspective by referencing the work of other scholars, as well as philosophers. She adds their perspective to her own which again shores up her credibility and reinforces her theories. She also recommends that readers who are interested in further material turn to the works of these other scholars and philosophers, thus encouraging readers to expand their perspective on her theories even further through the work of others.
