Who is Captain Lambert from The Fortune of War and what is their importance?

Lambert, captain of the Java, is a poor man and an average tactician. His lack of foresight and untrained crew, leave his ship and men in a poor position for battle, and as a result, Lambert and many of his men lose their lives in the battle with the Constitution.
