Carrie Ryan sets her novel, The Forest of Hands and Teeth, mainly in the hometown village of Mary, and in the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Since this is the post-apocalyptic world (the origins of which are shrouded in mystery), names of the former world have passed away to more descriptive terms that belie the nature of the described. For example, the Forest of Hands and Teeth is full of hideous Unconsecrated undead, and the Cathedral is the home of the Sisterhood and is the religious center of the village's world. This allows the reader to at once both understand and be mystified by a world that is very similar to his or her own, but entirely unrecognizable as well.
