Stewart uses metaphor in the poem, The Forest, to construct a forest of trees from a forest of language, or vice versa, and she ends up with a remarkably clear message. Although the poem's conclusion offers no hope for what is "lost to us now," the poet's overriding point will only become more obvious as new layers are added to the history of humankind.
