What factor, regarding friendship, contributed to the death of Eddie's father?

Even after Eddie's father chased Mickey from the house with a hammer, he followed him down to the pier where he sees Mickey fall into the ocean (he was very drunk). Despite everything, he jumps in after Mickey, and as a result, he catches pneumonia (which finally kills Eddie's father).
